               1. GOD GIVES US THE DESIRE TO DO HIS WILL

                     1. “TO WILL”

                     1. NOT INNATE

                     2. #2309 thelo: to will, have in mind, intend; 1a) to be resolved or determined, to purpose; 1b) to desire, to wish; 1c)to love; 1c1) to like to do a thing, be fond of doing; 1d) to take delight in, have pleasure

                     2. GOD ENABLES US TO ACT ACCORDING TO HIS GOOD PURPOSE

                     3. Keeping  your eyes on the prize produces joy.

         1. [17-18] “even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.”

               1. POURED OUT LIKE A DRINK OFFERING

                     1. There were drink offerings involved in Greek customs too: ritual libations to the gods; ceremonial outpourings of wine on new graves; splashing wine on the floor to inaugurate a party. But the key thing about the Old Testament drink offering was that it was a supplement to something else. It was poured out to accompany another kind of sacrifice. Every day, for example, the Jewish priests sacrificed a lamb in the morning and another at sunset; and each time a litre of wine (approximately) was poured out around the altar as well.

                     2. And the drink offering was for God alone. The worshippers didn't share any of it (as they did with other sacrifices).

                     3. All of this makes sense of the picture Paul is drawing here: the "sacrifice and service" of the Philippians was one kind of offering to God; his own contribution (is he talking about the possibility of his death here, or of all the sacrifices of his life) is an additional, supplementary drink offering, poured out to God alone. http://bibleteach.blogspot.com/2006/04/philippians-217-18.html

                     4. Genesis 35:14 “And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.”

                     5. Like the burnt offering, the meal offering was completely consumed. The priest placed a portion atop the burnt offering and kept the remainder for his consumption.  Nothing remained for the offerer.  The meal offering depicts that man has a claim on man. We are obligated to love our neighbor as ourselves; we are our brother's keeper. We owe these to fellow man, and therefore fellow man has a claim on our love, even as we have a claim on his love.

                           1. Paul writes in Philippians 2:17, "Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all." The drink offering was an adjunct to the meal offering.

                           2. Clearly, Paul considered his life as an offering to the Philippians for the benefit of their faith in God and His purpose.   Because of this, he was not able to live life as he might otherwise have chosen. He was always at their service; he sacrificed his life on their behalf.   http://bibletools.org/index.cfm/fuseaction/Topical.show/RTD/CGG/ID/2909/Drink-Offering.htm

               2. “GLAD” = #5463 chairo { khah-ee-ro}: 1) to rejoice, be glad; 2) to rejoice exceedingly

                     1. SACRIFICE > JOY

         2. On April 26, 2008, the Central Washington Wildcats, the women’s softball team, faced the Western Oregon Wolves in a doubleheader.

         3. The Wildcats lost the opener 8--1, putting themselves one loss from elimination in the race for the NCAA playoffs.

               1. On April 26, 2008 CENTRAL WASHINGTON PLAYED FOR WESTERN OREGON.  THE WINNER WOULD GO ON TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.  MALLORY HOLTMAN AND LIZ WALLACE PLAYED FOR CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY.  IF THEIR TEAM LOST, IT WOULD BE THEIR LAST COLLEGE GAME.

               2. SARA TUCHOLSKY WAS  A part-time outfielder FOR WESTERN OREGON.  IF HER TEAM LOST,IT WOULD ALSO BE HER LAST COLLEGE SOFTBALL GAME.

               3. SARA WAS UP TO BAT.  IT WAS THE BOTTOM OF THE NEXT TO LAST INNING.  SHE  had had ONLY 3 hits in 34 at-bats in her ENTIRE SENIOR SEASON.  BUT THIS TIME SHE SLAMMED THE PITCH over the fence in left-center FOR A HOME RUN W/ 2 PLAYERS ON BASE.  A 3 RUN HOMER THAT WOULD PUT HER TEAM AHEAD.

               4. In her surprise and EXCITEMENT at hitting what appeared to be the first home run in her college career, Tucholsky missed first base.

               5. As she pivoted to touch the base, she tore her right anterior cruciate ligament.   SARA collapsed.

               6. At that point there were two apparent options:

                     1. Be replaced by a pinch runner and be credited with a two-run single. THAT WOULD TIE THE GAME.   OR

                     2. Be assisted off the field by a trainer or a coach, thus recording the loudest out in softball history AND HER TEAM WOULD STILL BE 2 RUNS DOWN.

               7. MALLORY HOLTMAN AND LIZ WALLACE QUICKLY DECIDED WHAT TO DO: TOGETHER THEY LIFTED SARA FROM THE GROUND, CRADLING HER IN THEIR ARMS AND TOOK HER AROUND TO EACH BASE, BEING CAREFUL TO MAKE SURE SARA’S FOOT TOUCHED EACH BASE.

               8. WHEN THEY BROUGHT HER TO HOME PLATE THEY GENTLY TOUCHED HER FOOT TO HOME PLATE AND SET HER DOWN.

               9. SARA HAD NOW HIT A 3 RUN HOMER IN HER LAST AT BAT IN HER COLLEGE BASEBALL CAREER.

              10. THERE WAS STILL ONE MORE INNING TO PLAY.  CENTRAL WASHINGTON WAS UNABLE TO SCORE.   SARA’S TEAM WON.  MALLORY AND LIZ’ TEAM LOST.   ALL 3 GIRLS CRIED.

              11. WHY DID MALLORY AND LIZ DO WHAT THEY DID?

                     1. HAD THEY SIMPLY LET THE CHIPS FALL WHERE THEY MAY, THEY WOULD HAVE WON AND GONE ON TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

                     2. WHY JEAPORDIZE A SURE WIN?

         4. THEIR COACH, GARY FREDERICK, HAD TAUGHT THEM A BETTER WAY NO MATTER THE COST.  HE KEPT HIS TEAM FOCUSED ON THE REAL PRIZE: THE PURITY OF THE GAME, INTEGRITY, HONOR; NOT WIN AT ALL COSTS.

         5. "I wonder if they're laughing at us," Mallory says.  The spectators do not laugh. They stand, feeling a certain euphoria, their applause a mild hailstorm. Mallory lowers Sara's foot to third base. An umpire hovers nearby, just to make sure.

         6. SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, 6/29/09 “THE WAY IT SHOULD BE”

               1. “It gave gooseflesh to a phys-ed teacher in Pennsylvania, made a market researcher in Texas weak in the knees, put a lump in the throat of a crusty old man in Minnesota. It convinced a cynic in Connecticut that all was not lost.  At an office in the South, one woman tried to tell another woman the story but cried so much that the second woman had to find the details on the Internet, and then she cried too. At an office in the North, a 250-pound man was wiping his eyes when a colleague walked in, so he lied and said his contacts were bothering him. At a trucking company in the Midwest, a jaded executive cried the first time he read the story and then went back and read it again, because it made him feel so wonderful.   Yes, men cried. As much as women, maybe more: a retired cop in upstate New York, his body confused by conflicting orders from his nervous system; a fire-protection engineer in Washington State, his heart rate and blood pressure soaring and plunging; a biology professor in Montana, his breath coming in long sighs; a self-described redneck logger in Oregon, warm water running in rivulets down his cheeks.  The economy was faltering then, in the spring of 2008. Gasoline was $3.56 a gallon. We were five years and 4,000 dead soldiers into Iraq. The story jolted us back to sanity, people said, and restored our faith, and reminded us that goodness and decency and honor still exist.”

               2. “Some will say that only a woman would have done what Mallory did, that a baseball player in the same situation would have left his opponent in the dust. Some will say that only an amateur would have done what Mallory did, and only a player from a Division II college or lower, because in Division I and professional sports the purity of competition is tainted by money. There will be plenty of debate, except on one point.   Almost all of us who hear Mallory's story will search the high meadows of our souls for hope that we would have done the same thing, or that we will, if we are ever given the chance.  Mallory walks off the field into the arms of her mother and father. "We're so proud of you, honey," they tell her, as always, and the evening holds the promise of a trip to Outback Steakhouse. But right now the game is over, and her softball career will expire in seven days, and the playoffs are forever out of reach.   And Mallory Holtman weeps.” Sports Illustrated article, “The Way It Should Be”

         7. WHY WAS PAUL WILLING TO BE POURED OUT AS A DRINK OFFERING?

               1. BECAUSE JESUS, WHOM HE HAD ONCE HATED, HAD TAUGHT HIM A BETTER WAY: TO KEEP HIS EYES FOCUSED ON THE REAL PRIZE.

               2. PHIL. 3:7-11 “ But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.  What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ  and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christthe righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.  I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,   and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.”

               3. MALLORY’S FATHER PUT HIS ARMS AROUND HER AND SAID: “I’M SO PROUD OF YOU.”

               4. THE GOSPEL TEACHES US THAT TODAY, THIS DAY, JESUS PUTS HIS ARMS AROUND THE BELIEVER AND SAYS: “I LOVE YOU SO VERY MUCH.”

         8. OUR JOY IS HAVING THE FATHER’S FULL APPROVAL RIGHT NOW IN CHRIST JESUS!

         9. KEEP  YOUR EYES ON THE PRIZE!

        10. TALK ABOUT “EXTREME MAKEOVER, HOMEOWNER EDITION”

         1. “[F]or it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose....”

       11. SIN HAS MADE US ALL INFIRM; WE NEED TO BE CARRIED AROUND THE BASES AND TO HOME PLATE.  JESUS DOES THAT FOR US.
