Chris and Anastasia Brewster

Chris and Anastasia Brewster met as high school teammates on the cross-country and track team in the bedroom community of Gilbert, Arizona.  They dated throughout high school and college, and married in 2000.  Chris graduated from Azusa Pacific with a B.A. in Sociology; Anastasia graduated from Pomona College with a B.A. in Economics.

Back in Phoenix, Anastasia worked as a litigation consultant for six years.  Early into her career, after hearing Kit Danley of Neighborhood Ministries speak on God’s Heart for the Poor, it was clear she had to get involved in what God was doing in the city.  Her initial inquiry for volunteer work was answered with a “match” as a mentor to an inner-city teenager through Neighborhood’s stay-in-school mentoring program, which birthed a relationship with a young person that she maintains today.  Further, Anastasia has pursued her interest in community development serving on the board of a CDC in Tempe, AZ and pursuing a Master’s degree in Geography from Arizona State University.

Chris accepted the opportunity to do a two-year internship with Neighborhood Ministries in 2002, where he was assigned the task of re-building their weeknight high school program.  Drawing on his limited experience coaching track at an urban high school during college, Chris jumped into the mess of building community among an eclectic bunch of urban teenagers stuck in generational poverty, most of whom had been loved on as young children in the ministry.  He discovered his love for leadership development, especially among small groups and in one-on-one relationship.  Here in San Diego, in tandem with his work planting this new church, Chris is coaching the Cross Country and Track teams at Hoover High and collaborating with other city-minded ministries.  He also is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Theological Studies from Bakke Graduate University.

Chris and Anastasia welcomed their first child, Madeline Grace, in 2006.  She, too, has a strong sense of justice and freedom, just watch her protest a diaper change.
